Travel Tips: Hair Care

I have pretty unique curly hair so what works for me will probably not work for 99% of the planet but there’s a lot to be said about general hair care that I think is transferable. For starters I have never dyed nor permed my hair in any way, and every hairdresser has commented on the strength and health of my hair. Jussss sayin’!

Because my hair is so particular, I try to bring the same hair products I use at home while traveling. I will put all the products in small, TSA-approved containers unless I am traveling for 2 weeks or more; then I will either pack the full bottles in my checked luggage or just buy at my destination. The one exception to this rule is my gel: I never, ever leave that behind!

Here are the products I use:

I use a leave-in-conditioner once to twice a week at home but travel rarely with it because of space issues unless I’m going to an extremely dry, desert climate. Then I will put a little in a tiny container or snack Ziploc bag just in case.

I also like to make sure I give my hair a “rest day” from washing/styling so I will leave it unwashed at least once a week. That day I pretty much have to wear a hat/bandana or put it in a bun. I also never use hot styling products like a flat iron or curling iron (because I mean why bother…) so that saves space when I travel, saves time in the morning/night, and protects the long-term health of my already dry hair.
