Art Through Time: A Global View

December 2, 2016

So I have had the privileged to meet up with a few AP Art History teachers in the past few weeks and the one thing I notice more people need to know about is Annenberg Learner’s series: “Art Through Time:  A Global View.” I take the time to show ALL episodes with my AP class, most of them in class too! Here is a list of the episodes and how they relate to the AP Curriculum; it’s a great tool for thematic grouping!!!

20150602_140544Converging Culture

Artworks related to the 250:

I typically save this video for after I cover Western art up to the 19th century & all Non-Western art so they can fully make the Western/Non-Western connections.

Dreams & Visions

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Ecstasy of St. Teresa
  • The Scream
  • Maya Lintel
  • #25, The Jungle

Honestly, I have stuck this video in a different unit every time; I think it best correlates after you discuss Baroque and Maya art but perhaps as a preview of Surrealist art?

History & Memory

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Jacques-Louis David
  • Lukasa
  • Jacob Lawrence
  • Bayeux Tapestry
  • Column of Trajan
  • Romanticized Native American paintings
  • Marie de’Medici cycle
  • Albrecht Durer
  • Native American ledger

I use this video either during or right after my unit of African art to teach the Lukasa and as a preview Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

Ceremony & Society

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Portrait of Louis XIV
  • Basin (Baptistère of Saint Louis)
  • Feathered helmet
  • Persepolis
  • Sierra Leon mask
  • Shah Jahan
  • Nikisi Nkondi
  • A Congo stool

I always use this video before my unit on African and Oceanic art to introduce major themes and connect it to other ceremonial pieces.

Cosmology & Belief

Artworks related to the 250:

This video is perfect after my World Religions Unit; I combine many content areas across the AP Art History curriculum to teach the five major world religions together.

Artworks related to the 250:

This video is most applicable to Ancient Egyptian art, so I play it with my unit on The Ancient World (Ancient Near East & Ancient Egypt).

Domestic Life

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Faith Ringgold
  • Fallingwater
  • Villa Savoy
  • Dutch genre scene

I use this video during my 20th Century Unit to teach Villa Savoy and Fallingwater; after we watch the 25 minute episode I give students articles on either piece and we discuss domesticity in various environments.

Artworks related to the 250:

This video goes really well with my Medieval Europe Unit, which I teach after World Regions, and so it is a nice bridge with Islamic text.

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Hatshepsut
  • Diego Velasquez
  • Andy Warhol

I haven’t really found a “good”  place to stick this one so I usually wait until the very end of the year to use as thematic review or have them watch it over Spring Break.

The Natural World

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Serpent Mound
  • Spiral Jetty
  • Hudson River School landscape
  • Chinese scroll
  • Japanese polychrome woodblock

I always show this video as a connector in between my Art of the Americas Unit and East Asian art.

The Urban Experience

Artworks related to the 250:

Although feel like this video would go well after teaching all of the Ancient Mediterranean, I always seem to sneak it in after teaching the Renaissance because I feel it correlates well with the Palazzo Ruccelai even though that building is not discussed here.

Conflict & Resolution

Artworks related to the 250:

  • Y no hai Remedio (And There’s Nothing to Be Done)
  • Russian Revolution propaganda art
  • Diego Rivera
  • Kara Walker
  • Chairman Mao en Route to Anyuan
  • Hagia Sophia
  • Bamiyan Buddhas

I always show this after my 20th Century Unit but before I get to Contemporary Art because I feel that the 20th Century was rife with conflict and artistic reactions to it so this is perfect.

The Body

Artworks related to the 250:

I show this video after my unit on The Classical World, which is right before my World Religions Unit, so it serves as a bridge to different world theories on displaying the body in art.
